2.     Course introduction

With the development of bio-medicine and the progress of social civilization, laboratory animals are one of the important supporting conditions for the development of life sciences and related research. Without the development of laboratory animals, there was no development of modern bio-medicine. Animal welfare refers to animal health, comfort, physiological and psychological survival in a pleasant state of feeling, while human beings provide animals with the corresponding material conditions and behavior. If animal welfare is not observed in animal experiments, scientific researchers can’t obtain objective, scientific and accurate scientific research data, and can’t produce high-level scientific research results. Attaching importance to animal welfare is conducive to the production of high-level scientific research achievements. Attaching importance to animal welfare is conducive to highlighting the moral level of human beings. It is also a manifestation of the improvement of social morality and social progress. At present, animal welfare science has evolved from the original ethical and moral debate into a comprehensive subject which is permeated and intersected by natural science and humanities.

Taking advantage of the resources of Animal Laboratory Center/A3 Laboratory of Wuhan University, this course can be offered to graduates (not limited to medicine, pharmacy, biology, chemistry, physics, environment, law, humanities, economics, etc.). This course enables students to understand the concept of laboratory animal welfare, relevant regulations and key technologies. Through the study of theory and practice courses, students can not only familiarize themselves with the concept of animal welfare and develop the bioethics of respecting life, but also help them establish correct animal experiment design and optimization concepts, and improve the level of using animals for scientific research. This course is helpful to cultivate graduate students with first-class scientific research ability and cultural and moral literacy.

Teaching method: theory teaching (multimedia + video); Experiment of animals
